When we think of design, we often think of colorful couches, contemporary dining sets or trendy paint colors.    However, in our zeal to make our homes an attractive, welcoming place to live, we often overlook the best designer money can’t buy: Mother Nature.

In Texas, we’re fortunate to have a diverse landscape that supports a wide array of flora and fauna. By utilizing Texas’ natural offerings, we can create outdoor spaces that are inviting to you and to Mother Nature’s livelier children – the local wildlife.

Native Texas plants come in a wide range of colors and sizes that allow you to make your outdoor space an extension of your artistic aesthetic. In addition to providing endless design options, they’re accustomed to Texas’ climate, which makes them hardy and drought-resistant. This means you can spend more time and money enjoying your yard than maintaining it.

The best feature of many native plants is their appeal to wildlife. Plants such as hibiscus or honeysuckle attract hummingbirds while lantana and sunflowers attract butterflies. These stunning visitors offer you entertainment while also nourishing your plants.

You can also create a Zen-like retreat in your yard by adding water features. For example, fountains provide water to sustain wildlife as well as the soothing sound of running water for visitors and birdbaths are a great way to attract our feathered friends and the beauty and melodies they bring with them.

Using Texas’ natural gifts, you can create an outdoor space that is truly an expression of your individual personality and make your backyard a place that feels like home.

Enjoying outdoor spaces in all seasons is one of the greatest benefits to living in Charlotte. “As society moves toward a focus in making memories at home, more people see the value in finishing their patio or deck to create an outdoor living area,” says Gregg Setzer, owner of Porches & Yards, a company who offers garden and patio furniture and accessories.

But how do you choose the right outdoor furniture for the space? There are three main types of furniture to consider: natural or synthetic wicker, aluminum or wrought iron, and teak or Brazilian cherry. In general, “Outdoor living rooms are usually close to the home, so wicker would be appropriate,” Gregg says. “The further from the house, swings and chaises are more popular, and on a deck, aluminum or wrought iron looks best.”

Placement of the furniture is key to preserving the look. “Though coated with outdoor primer, natural wicker is made from all organic material and should be under covered porches,” explains Gregg. If you want the look without the worry, “Synthetic wicker is made of vinyl and durable enough to take a beating from the elements.”

As fall approaches and the weather starts to cool, it won’t be long before entertaining makes its move indoors. But for one Charlotte family, they cherish the crisp autumn air and hold on to every possible last bit of being outdoors. For them, fall is all about entertaining on a manageable scale with close friends.

“For me, spring and fall are the best times to entertain in the South,” said Robin Branstrom. “But I’m especially fond of fall entertaining because the weather is so beautiful and it is such a wonderful time to get back together with friends who you have not seen over the summer.”

And the Branstrom’s know how to throw a party! Robin and her husband, Bill, are part owners of the fabulously successful fine dining group, Harpers Restaurant Group. This includes such dining establishments as Zink, Upstream, Harpers and Mimosa Grill.

First, a little history about the setting for this wonderful get-together.

The Normandy Tudor style home was originally built in 1927 and came close to being a local historical landmark. A home that old in one of Charlotte’s original neighborhoods, understandably was in need of some updating.

It’s been a decade coming, but there’s good news if you’re looking for real stone for home accents in lieu of the man-made stone/pre-cast concrete of recent years that was more popular due to pricing and availability. The time is now to get the real thing – and often for less of an investment than faux stones.

“Real dimensional-cut limestone was specifi ed 20 years ago before it became so costly,” LC Lynch, owner of Stone by Lynch, says. “Homeowners locally started using pre-cast concrete made to look like real stone – sometimes delivering a real appearance and sometimes not because it’s concrete. Now dimension stones have returned to the marketplace due to more attractive scheduling and pricing…”

We’re all doing it – many homeowners are retreating into their outdoor living areas as opposed to spending money on traveling these days. Nesting at home in a warm, inviting environment with family and friends has become typical for many reasons: Cost savings; convenience with 24/7 access to your own peaceful or lively sanctuary, depending on whether a pool party is in full swing or you’re having a quiet dinner by that same pool; comfort right outside your back door; and of course, the future home resale increase you garner from a beautiful outdoor space.

The trick is to start now if you want to add a pool so you can cash in on it all this year, not to mention the enjoyment factor. “Pools are great investments for families who cannot afford a vacation for the next several years,” says Frank Aylward, owner of Blue Haven Pools and Spas. “In the long run, it saves money. Everybody is looking for something more affordable and to help, we have not raised prices in two years and have not cut our construction quality or integrity.”

Pools, spas, waterfalls, water features, outdoor fireplaces, kitchens, gas and wood-burning fire pits – you name it; Blue Haven does it. In addition, through partnerships they handle your landscaping, fencing, irrigation, and pool-house construction – with Blue Haven serving as your point person for all enhancements.

High on the list of priorities for house hunters is square footage. But getting the most livable space for the dollar might mean looking outside of your four walls. After moving into her brick and stone home in Weddington, N.C., Linda Nugent found her backyard was being underutilized.

“It was completely wasted space,” she relates. “We had a backyard veranda, but we never used it.” A referral from a pool contractor led her to Tony Everett, president of Custom Land Design based in Charlotte. Specializing in integrating landscapes and hardscapes, the company has experience designing outdoor rooms.

“In the past, homeowners made backyard improvements just for the look,” Everett relates. “But lately more people are selling their vacation place in favor of investing in making outdoor living an important part of their home.”

Once the spa and pool were installed, Nugent wanted a poolhouse, fireplace and outdoor kitchen to complete the space. “We had a general notion of what we wanted, but Tony took our thoughts and pictures and gave us advice and additional ideas before coming up with a design,” she says.

With a wide variety of materials available for outdoor living projects, achieving a cohesive look can be difficult. “Tony kept drawing me back to materials that would match our house, so the end result looked like it was there from the day the house was built,” Nugent relates…

As sure as there are more joggers on your street with the (finally)–warmer weather, it won’t be long before you’ll want to venture outdoors to relax and dine with family and friends. Savvy homeowners are planning ahead to get their homes transformed for full enjoyment this season, before the rush.

“We urge homeowners to get started for the spring and summer seasons of outdoor living now. When spring arrives, they are set for many enjoyable days and evenings relaxing in their outdoor sanctuaries, while the plants are in full bloom,” says Mark Morgan, owner of The Morgan Landscape Group – one of Charlotte’s premier outdoorliving contractors. “Many of our newer customers are surprised to learn with the proper planning including fireplaces and firepits, they can enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round with beautiful plants and features that provide visual and aromatic interest.”

When it comes to landscaping, “edible ornamentals” are a popular design trend. Besides the enticing fragrances permeating throughout  your outdoor areas, the bonus of edible plants is a fun and practical part of landscaping. Think blueberries or strawberries planted in a container, fig trees, blackberries on a trellis, grapes on an arbor, or tomatoes in an eco-friendly container…

Winter in the South means a few moderately cold days but doesn’t halt year-round outdoor enjoyment if you have the right backyard setup for entertaining and relaxing. When Larry Osier decided to double the size of his home, he chose his unused backyard for the addition in part because of the temperate North Carolina climate.

“Adding outdoor rooms provides a complete extension of our indoor living space,” says homeowner Osier. “We never used our backyard before the landscaping and hardscaping project,” he says, “but now our family and guests gravitate to the backyard, even if the weather is chilly. We have lunch there and entertain regularly in the evening. One of our favorite family traditions is to relax in the extra-large spa on Christmas Day.”

In three months, Biggers Lawn & Landscape installed a backyard cabana with a fireplace, pool, spa, and hardscaping to create a beautiful outdoor room. The fireplace is the biggest draw this time of year. Osier likes to entertain friends there, and he says they automatically move to the outside hearth even during the colder months. With a semi-enclosed cabana encompassing the stone fireplace and wooden mantle, the outdoor living room has a wood-shingled roof that keeps the area feeling enclosed enough to be cozy. A brick wall with inserted stones creates an “airy mountain” feel that coordinates and complements the large stone fireplace with its oversized fleur-de-lis keystone…

When Dave Stuver built his English country manor home in South Charlotte, he wanted a backyard retreat that fit seamlessly
into his wooded landscape. “I knew I wanted the plan to include a pool, but I didn’t want to disrupt the natural feel by sacrificing
a lot of trees or space,” he says.

A fter seeing a custom pool built for a home in the prestigious Meyers Park neighborhood, Stuver found Simon Spiers of Pool
by Design, a Charlotte-based company that provides full-service hardscape design and installation for outdoor living spaces.
“Outdoor living has become a requirement for busy professionals who want to create memories with their families,” Spiers
points out. “Their time is precious, and the right design can give them the amenities of a luxury resort at home, while allowing
them the convenience of sleeping in their own bed at night!”

However, achieving the right backyard plan in smaller spaces, takes experience…
