As fall approaches and the weather starts to cool, it won’t be long before entertaining makes its move indoors. But for one Charlotte family, they cherish the crisp autumn air and hold on to every possible last bit of being outdoors. For them, fall is all about entertaining on a manageable scale with close friends.
“For me, spring and fall are the best times to entertain in the South,” said Robin Branstrom. “But I’m especially fond of fall entertaining because the weather is so beautiful and it is such a wonderful time to get back together with friends who you have not seen over the summer.”
And the Branstrom’s know how to throw a party! Robin and her husband, Bill, are part owners of the fabulously successful fine dining group, Harpers Restaurant Group. This includes such dining establishments as Zink, Upstream, Harpers and Mimosa Grill.
First, a little history about the setting for this wonderful get-together.
The Normandy Tudor style home was originally built in 1927 and came close to being a local historical landmark. A home that old in one of Charlotte’s original neighborhoods, understandably was in need of some updating.

As the trend continues toward turning your current house into your custom home, more Charlotte-area residents are looking for options that make a space truly unique. “There are a variety of trends and innovative products which incorporate technology that were not available in the past,” says Suzanne Pizio, manager of showrooms at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery, a local supplier of plumbing fixtures, lighting and appliances.
However all those choices can be overwhelming. “The majority of consumers have begun their own research on products and styles, but they are full of unanswered questions,” Suzanne says. “An expert can help guide your decision-making process and bring solutions.” M aking the right choices can mean all the difference. David McGuire, chief operating officer of Andrew Roby, Inc., a local custom residential contractor, works with homeowners on projects large and small. “It’s about building a relationship,” says David. “We send homeowners to Ferguson because getting personalized attention from an expert consultant is something you probably won’t get at big-box retailer.”

As sure as there are more joggers on your street with the (finally)–warmer weather, it won’t be long before you’ll want to venture outdoors to relax and dine with family and friends. Savvy homeowners are planning ahead to get their homes transformed for full enjoyment this season, before the rush.
“We urge homeowners to get started for the spring and summer seasons of outdoor living now. When spring arrives, they are set for many enjoyable days and evenings relaxing in their outdoor sanctuaries, while the plants are in full bloom,” says Mark Morgan, owner of The Morgan Landscape Group – one of Charlotte’s premier outdoorliving contractors. “Many of our newer customers are surprised to learn with the proper planning including fireplaces and firepits, they can enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round with beautiful plants and features that provide visual and aromatic interest.”
When it comes to landscaping, “edible ornamentals” are a popular design trend. Besides the enticing fragrances permeating throughout your outdoor areas, the bonus of edible plants is a fun and practical part of landscaping. Think blueberries or strawberries planted in a container, fig trees, blackberries on a trellis, grapes on an arbor, or tomatoes in an eco-friendly container…

Many of us feel less energetic when the cold, dark days of winter arrive. For some, the darkness of winter can lead to something more serious than a case of the blahs; they suffer from a seasonal form of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, SAD affects an estimated 6% of Americans, causing depression, lethargy, irritability, and a desire to avoid social situations. Incidences of the disorder are higher in Canada and the UK, and can be as high as 20% in Scandinavian countries.
Light therapy is the most common treatment for SAD, from a full-spectrum light using beams more intense than normal light. These special lights mimic natural sunlight and have been shown to improve mood, energy, and overall well-being.
If you’re interested in light therapy, it’s important to note that not all lightboxes are created equal. Verilux has been manufacturing light therapy since 1956. Their HappyLight line of therapy lamps is the number one light therapy product in the world, using fullspectrum lighting to effectively address seasonal depression associated with long winters, rainy weather or lifestyles that dictate too much time indoors…

Design trends have followed suit, as interiors now reflect a “less is more” philosophy that uses every inch of space wisely, conserves energy, and strikes a balance between substance and style.

mindset. From practical to the purely aesthetic, we compared the results from NKBA with feedback from Charlotte design professionals to bring you the most significant kitchen and bath trends in our market.
